Program Update: 12 Teachers Trained on our New Skills for Life Curriculum

Our Ugandan team has been hard at work the past week to officially begin training 12 teachers from around the district on our new Skills for Life curriculum!

Our Skills for Life curriculum was developed in partnership between our US and UG teams, as well as local education consultant Patrick Olwa. Students will participate in this program in two cycles, with the first of the lessons being implemented in 3rd-5th grade and the second in the first three years of high school.

1 in 4 girls in rural Uganda will become pregnant before the age of 19, and only 17% of youth in these rural communities will make it past the 7th grade.

The primary purpose of the Skills for Life program is simple: to keep students in school.

According to co-founder and UG Country Director Collines Angwech, “The content of the curriculum is sufficient and mentors whom I interacted with believe that it will impact on the life of the learners and will have great impact on the [district] at large.”

These trainings will continue throughout the summer, with the goal of introducing the curriculum to hundreds of students in our six partner schools beginning in September. These lessons will be implemented into their normal school day, meaning that each and every student attending Global Leaders and its partner schools will receive these lessons at some point in their tenure as primary and secondary students. Among David, a teacher attending this training from Adak Secondary School, is looking forward to sharing this curriculum with his students, and believes it will positively impact his district as a whole.

“The way I have seen the Skills for Life curriculum, it will be very beneficial, and will help to change the [district] as well. It can help bring back some of the lost values in our community.” — Teacher Among David, Adak Secondary School

This program was funded by supporters of our Schools for Schools campaign last December, including a massive effort from our partner schools in the U.S., with over $5k of the funds for this program raised by high school students alone! This kind of global partnership to fuel local leadership is at the heart of what we do, and we’re looking forward to updating you on the progress and implementation of this program later this year!
